Hawks Blow 2-0 Lead, Fall to NJCU in Five Sets

New York, NY – After winning two closely contested sets, the Hawks faltered on the next three, giving up a 3-2 (25-30, 27-30, 30-21, 34-32, 15-12) decision to New Jersey City University in a non-divisional men's volleyball match on Thursday night at the Hunter Sportsplex.

The Hawks had four finish with more than 16 kills, led by sophomore outside hitter Wojciech Jakubiak (Poreba, Poland/Grover Cleveland) who finished with a match high 20 kills and ten kills. Freshman outside hitter Jerin Kallickal (Kerala, India/Swanhakal) added 18 kills and 12 digs, freshman middle blocker Eric Barty (Jamaica, NY/Cardozo) put up 17 kills and three total blocks, and senior middle blocker Shandu Foster (Long Island City, NY/Academy of American Studies) recorded 16 kills with two total blocks. Junior setter Zacarias Ripoll (Puerto Plata, D.R./John F. Kennedy) set a single match career high of 72 assists.

The Gothic Knights were led by sophomore outside hitter Marley Pena-Guzman (Atlanta, GA/Central Gwinnett) who finished with 19 kills and ten digs. Next in line for NJCU was senior outside hitter Kevin Rodgers with 16 kills and a team high 17 digs and senior opposite Thiago Siqueira added 11 kills, hitting .400 along with three total blocks.

The Hawks, who still lead the all-time series with NJCU 12-11, fall to 18-13 on the year, while the Gothic Knights improve to 13-8. Hunter will be back in action on Saturday, when they face Brooklyn College at 9:00 a.m. at the final CUNYAC Multi-Match, hosted by CCNY.
