New York, NY - On Wednesday, October 27, the men's soccer team hosted the City College Beavers in the quarterfinal round of the CUNYAC Tournament. A goal by Saif Zureikat in the opening half gave the Hawks momentum heading into the second half where two more goals put the Beavers in a 3-0 hole, a deficit they would not be able to recover from. With the win, Hunter advances to the semifinal round where they will face York College while CCNY's season comes to a close.
In the 20th minute of the game, the Hawks put pressure on Beaver goalie, Kucuk Tayfun and capitalized on a rebound which resulted in a goal by Zureikat to give Hunter the 1-0 lead. CCNY trailed in shots, seven to three and corners, three to one and played on the defensive end for most of the first half.
Just seven minutes into the second half, Leander Kotsopoulos picked up a loose ball in midfield, worked his way toward the goal and fired a shot that sailed past a diving Tayfun to notch the second goal of the game. With time running low, CCNY could not get anything going, but Hunter continued to press on. In the 69th minute, senior Anthony Intrabartolo fired a shot from the left side of the box to set the Beavers back by three goals. As time wound down, the Hawks held of CCNY and held them scoreless.
Hunter keeper, Zade Haobsh recorded the shutout and had seven saves while Tayfun made three in the loss.
The Hawks advance to the semifinal round of the CUNYAC Tournament and will play against the Cardinals of York on Saturday, October 30 at the Metropolitan Oval. The game is slated for an 8pm start.
