New York, NY - Over the weekend, the men's basketball team traveled to Hoboken, New Jersey to take part in the Stevens Tip Off Tournament. The Hawks took on host institution, Stevens in their first game on Friday night and fell 76-59, but bounced back to grab their first win on the second day by way of a 58-39 victory over Emory and Henry University.
The Ducks got out to a quick 8-2 start and never relinquished the lead as they forced the Hawks to play catch up for the entire game. Hunter would fall behind by nine points but slowly closed the gap to pull within five, heading into half time down 32-27.
At the 17:36 mark of the second half, a Sheldon Jones layup put the Ducks up by 10, a three pointer by Maxwell Dubois sparked a surge in which the Hawks pulled within three. With 8:04 left to play, Hunter began to run out of gas as the Hawks powered away, increasing the lead to as high as 19 and eventually winning 76-59.
Dubois had a shared the game high in points with Jones as each posted 18. Courtien tallied 13 points while Mike Cutri and Simon Smith of the Ducks recorded 16 and 17 respectively.
Still in search of their first win, the Hawks kicked off the second and final day of the tournament against the Wasps of Emory and Henry University. The first half proved to be equally matched as each side battled back and forth, changing leads on five occasions and never letting each other get more than a four point lead. However, a late jumper by Dubois with six seconds left gave Hunter a six point cushion heading into the second half.
Two back to back free throws by Mark Courtien jump started a 23-8 run as the Hawks went up 40-22 and never looked back. Hunter opened up a 20 point margin with just over eight minutes to go and, despite a late Wasp surge to cut the lead down to 11, came away with the 58-39 win to notch their first victory of the season.
Dubois led all scorers with 18 points while Courtien chipped in with 18 and Panagiotis Koutsoloukas grabbed 15 rebounds.
The Hawks return to action on Tuesday, November 23 when they travel to Poughkeepsie, New York to take on Vassar College at 6:00 pm
