New York, NY – The men's basketball team played host to the Camels of Connecticut College tonight in a non conference meeting. The Hawks jumped out to an early six point lead, but it was quickly wiped away as they were down by seven at the half. They bounced back and took a one point lead the early minutes of the second, but could not sustain it as the Camels hot shooting proved to be the downfall of the Hawks as they were defeated 83-64. With the loss, Hunter falls 8-9, 3-3 CUNYAC while Connecticut moves to 9-9, 0-4 NESCAC.
Two turnovers by Rob Harrigan led to an Izzy Hoffman layup and Mark Courtein three pointer to give the Hawks a quick 5-0 lead. However, at the 13:56 mark, a shot from behind the arc by Boris Jeremic knotted the game at nine a piece. With just under five minutes left to play in the half, the Camels connected on each of their next five shots from the field and continued to pour it on as they drained 13 points in the final minutes. Hunter hung tough and headed into the locker room down 30-37 thanks to a last second three by Jeffrey Daza on a feed from Panagiotis Koutsoloukas.
Opening the second half was a made layup by Matt Vadas which was followed by ten unanswered Hawk points to regain a 40-39 lead. It was short lived as the Camels quickly regained the lead on a Jethro Anilus three pointer to go back up by two. From there, the lead slowly increased, putting more pressure on the Hawks as the minutes ticked away. Still within striking distance, Jason Cole nailed a three at the 6:37 mark to pull within six, but it's as close as they would get. The Camels would go on to drain another 26 points in the final six minutes to put the Hawks in a hole in which they would not be able to get out of.
Izzy Hoffman led the Hawks with 15 points and connecting on five of five from the charity stripe while Courtein and Cole each chipped in with 11 points each. Anilus and Mason Lopez were the game high scorers with 18 a piece.
The Hawks return to action on Wednesday, January 26 when they travel to Queens to take on conference foes, the Cardinals of York College. Tipoff is scheduled for 8:00 pm.
