Hoboken, NJ - Over the weekend, the men's volleyball team participated in the Stevens Institute of Technology Tournament. Over the two-day event, the Hawks took on host Stevens and Newbury on day one and then capped the event with a match against Mt. Olive. Despite losing all three, Hunter put up a good fight and in two matches, jumped out to an early two set lead, but could not hang on for the win. After the losses, the Hawks' record stands at 1-3 overall.
In the first match of the tournament, the Hawks took on host Stevens and jumped out to a quick two set lead, 25-16 and 25-19 on the strength of .238 and .417 hitting percentage in the first and second set respectively. However, the Ducks charged back by taking the following two sets, 25-23, 25-19, forcing a fifth and deciding set. Knotted at 14 a piece, a kill by Jonathan Landis made it point game in favor of the Ducks, who finished it off with a block to take the win in dramatic fashion.
Braien Otsla and Eric Barty led the Hawks as they recorded 11 and 15 kills respectively while setter Stanley Martinez recorded 39 assists in the loss.
Against Newbury, it was the same scenario as the Stevens game in that the Hawks jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, 25-21 and 25-17. Again, The Hawks couldn't put their counterparts away and went down in the next two sets 25-22 and 26-24 to force a fifth and final set. Even on the strength of a combine 49 kills between Barty, Otsla and Marcin Polak, the Hawks went down by a score of 16-14 in the final set to stuffer their second loss of the Tournament.
On the second day, in the Hawks' final match, Mount Olive College proved too strong to handle as they put Hunter away in three sets, 25-18, 25-16 and 25-13. They could not seem to generate any offense as they posted just 21 kills as a team.
The Hawks return to action on Thursday, January 27 when they travel to Poughkeepsie, New York for a match against Vassar. The game is slated for a 7:00 pm start.
