Volleyball Goes 3-1 at Endicott Tournament; Otsla Named to All-Tournament Team

Beverley, MA – On Saturday and Sunday, the men's volleyball team took part in the Endicott College volleyball tournament that featured nine other teams from the tri-state area. The Hawks got off to a slow start as they fell to Emmanuel in straight sets, but then bounced back and won their final three matches each by a 3-1 set score to finish the two-day event 3-1. After the weekend, the Hawks evened out their record at 8-8 while they still remain strong in conference play, 4-1.

The Hawks had a rocky first match as Emmanuel College got the best of them in three straight sets to kick off the tournament. Braien Otsla and Eric Barty combine for 20 kills, but it was not enough as they lost by scores of 25-18, 25-17, 25-21.

In the closing match of day one, Hunter rebounded and hit their stride against Emerson College, rallying after a 28-26 first set loss and taking the next three, 25-18, 25-14, 25-21. Barty led the Hawks with 13 kills while Otsla added 10 and John Gemegah chipped in with nine. Setter Stanley Martinez had 45 assists in the win.

Opening the second and final day, the Hawks kept momentum on their side as they put Hilbert away in four sets. On the strength of 14 and 15 team kills in the first and second sets respectively, Hunter rolled through Hilbert in four sets 25-16, 25-12, 23-25, 25-16, to take their second win of the tournament.

Closing out the two-day event was a match against SUNYIT. Dropping the first set 25-20, Hunter rebounded behind Barty's 17 kills and took the next two 25-23, 25-15. In the final set, the Hawks hammered home 16 kills as a team and earned their third win of the tournament by way of a score of 25-15.

Otsla, who recorded 11, 10, 15 and 16 kills in each match respectively, was named to the All-Tournament team along with ten other players. Pablo Oliveria of Baruch was named the MVP.

The Hawks are back in action on Tuesday, February 15 when they travel upstate to SUNY New Paltz for a makeup match beginning at 7:00 pm.
