New Paltz, NY – On Tuesday night, the men's volleyball team took on the #15 SUNY New Paltz Hawks in a non-conference make up contest. Hunter essentially played from behind the entire match, getting as close as a tie score, but never taking a lead as they went down in three straight sets by scores of 20-25, 15-25, 20-25. With the loss, Hunter drops to 8-9, 4-1 CUNYAC while New Paltz moves to 7-7.
New Paltz jumped out to a quick 6-2 lead in the opening set, but thanks to a few errors and two kills by junior Eric Barty, the Hawks knotted the score at six to get back into the game. However, a kill by Mike Van Tyne sparked a 6-1 New Paltz run that gave them just enough of a cushion to hold off the Hawks and take the first set.
As the second set got underway, both teams, for the first 14 serves, played even and were tied at seven points a piece. A Braien Otsla kill kept his team in it as Hunter found themselves down 14-12, but New Paltz, backed by the strength of 13 kills on 22 attempts with just four errors began to pull away and power down the stretch, extending their lead to as much as ten points en route to a 25-15 second set win.
In the third and final set, Hunter would pull even with their counterparts on five separate occasions and fell behind by four at 15-11. With the help of two opponent errors and a service ace by Albert Chi, Hunter pulled within one at the 15-14 mark. However, three unanswered New Paltz points proved to be the downfall of the Hawks as the four point gap was too much to overcome and a kill by Dylan Rabidoux put the match away 25-20.
Barty led the Hawks with 11 kills while Otsla added nine. Misa Garo and Van Tyne had game highs with 32 assists and 13 kills respectively.
Hunter returns to action on Thursday, February 17 when they travel to Brooklyn, NY to take on the Bulldogs of Brooklyn College in their sixth conference match of the season. The game is scheduled for a 6:00 pm start.
