It was a rough few days for the Hunter College men's volleyball team who posted an 0-3 record at the Stevenson Invitational over the weekend.
The Hawks got their weekend started with a match against Pfeifer on Friday, March 11. Hunter kept the first set close before ultimately losing 25-21. That was as close as the Hawks would come to winning a set as they dropped the final two sets by scores of 25-12 and 25-17.
Despite the loss,
John Gemegah had a strong game for the Hawks, with eight kills and a .636 attack percentage. As a team, the Hawks had an attack percentage of just .089.
Matters did not improve much for the Hawks on Saturday either. In the first match of the day the Hawks took on Philadelphia Biblical. After losing the first set 25-17, the Hawks finally won their first set of the weekend 21-25 in the second, before dropping the final two 25-23 and 25-13, respectively.
Eric Barty led the team in this one, tallying 17 kills while posting a .263 hitting percentage, while the team hit just .063 collectively.
Hunter's final match of the weekend turned out to be their strongest as they forced Stevenson into five sets. The Hawks got off to a great start in the match defeating Stevenson 25-21 in two consecutive sets. However, Stevenson came back strong in the third set, defeating Hunter 21-25. Hunter battled through the final two sets but Stevenson claimed the victory in each (23-25, 8-15).
Several Hawks looked impressive in this one, with
Braien Otsla leading the team with 21 kills while Barty added 16 kills, with a .270 attack percentage. As a team the Hawks collected 61 kills with their highest attack percentage of the tournament (.221).
With the three losses, Hunter dropped to 15-15 on the season. The Hawks will return to action when they take on Medgar Evers College tomorrow, Tuesday, March 15. The match is set to kick off at 7 p.m.
