New York, NY – The men's volleyball team took on the Cougars of Medgar Evers tonight in the quarterfinal round of the CUNYAC/Emblem Health Men's Volleyball Tournament. Through a balanced effort on both the offensive and defensive ends, the Hawks soared past their conference rivals in straight sets. Hunter, now 17-15, will advance to the semifinal round where they will play Lehman College while Medgar ends their season.
After the Cougars were forced to forfeit the first set, the Hawks began the contest with a one set advantage. Senior Marcin Polak hammered home five kills in the second set as the Hawks rolled through, 25-14 and taking a two set lead.
In the third set, Hunter committed just a single error on 20 attempts en route to 13 team kills while the Cougar's struggles continued, only managing to get two kills on 12 attempts. The contest would end 25-10 in favor of the Hawks.
John Gemegah and Eric Barty had six kills a piece while Braien Otsla and Polak each chipped in with five. Freshman setter, Stanley Martinez recorded 23 assists in the win.
The Hawks advance to the semifinals where they will take on Lehman, who beat Brooklyn College in straight sets (25-20, 25-19, 25-20). The game will be played on Friday, March 25 at 4:00pm at host Baruch College. Should the Hawks win, they will play in the championship game that same night at 8:00 pm.
