Jamaica, NY – On Tuesday, March 7, the men's volleyball team took on the Cardinals of York College in a conference matchup. Backed by sophomore John Gemegah's team leading 13 kills, the Hawks made quick work of their counterparts as they rolled through York in straight sets, 25-19, 25-19, 25-15. With the win, Hunter advances to 15-11, 11-2 CUNYAC while the Cardinals drop to 12-16, 6-7 CUNYAC.
With the first set knotted at four a piece, a Gemegah kill sparked a 4-0 run which was followed up by a 5-0 run a few points later to give Hunter enough a cushion to maintain the lead as junior Eric Barty slammed home the final point of the set.
In the final two sets, the Hawks were firing on all cylinders as they recorded a total of 27 kills with just eight errors. Defensively, they were equally as good, holding the Cardinals to just 19 and 15 points respectively and holding them to just 21 total kills as they swept the final two sets to earn their 15th victory of the season.
Gemegah led the Hawks with 13 kills while Barty chipped in with seven and Marcin Polak, Jonathan Park and Braien Otsla added five each. CUNYAC Rookie of the week, Stanley Martinez, recorded a game high of 27 assists. Ahmed Helmi of the Cardinals had a game high of 17 kills while Jhonnattan Fernandez added seven.
The Hawks are back in action tonight, March 9 when they travel downtown to take on the Violets of NYU in a non-conference matchup beginning at 7pm.
