Hawks Conclude 2011 Campaign at ECAC South Championship

Owings Hills, MD – On Saturday, April 9, the men's volleyball team took on the Mustangs of Stevenson University in the quarterfinal round of the ECAC South Championship. After dropping the first set, the Hawks rebounded with a second set win but would be halted there as the Mustangs would go on to take the match 3-1, putting a close to Hunter's season. With the loss, the Hawks conclude their season with an overall record of 19-17.

Hunter got off to a solid start, gapping their opponents 10-5 in the early stages of the opening set, but the Mustangs strung together a late 7-2 run allowing them to pull away toward the end, taking a 25-22 win despite being out-hit 14-11.

In the second set, again the Hawks took an early 10-5 lead, but this time, held off their counterparts. A Jonathan Park service ace closed out the set 25-22 in favor of the Hawks, tying the game at 1 set a piece. In the following set, Hunter got off to a very sluggish start, falling behind 11-2 early on and could not seem to get any momentum going, allowing the gap to grow to 10, eventually falling by a score of 25-15.

In the fourth, and what would prove to be the final set, the Hawks again fell behind early, 7-1, but battled back to within two on a kill by John Gemegah, making it 17-15. However, another late run by the Mustangs put the Hawks too far in the hole to recover and ultimately took the finale, 25-21, and closed the curtain on Hunter's season.

Eric Barty led the Hawks with 14 kills and five digs while Braien Otsla followed it up with 12 kills and six digs. Marcin Polak recorded a game high 15 digs to go along with his nine kills while setter Stanley Martinez recorded 10 digs and 40 assists in the loss.
