BROOKLYN, NY - The Hunter College men's basketball team erased a 20-point second-half deficit and with less than thirty seconds to go, scored four points to best St. Joseph's College-Brooklyn, 64-60 at Brooklyn Technical HS this afternoon.
With 22 seconds remaining,
Lorenzo Brown scored the go-ahead bucket on a layup from
Joel Cerda then following a St. Joseph's turnover and foul at four seconds,
Anthony Uter knocked down a pair of free throws to seal the Hawks' victory.
Hunter improves to 7-8 with the win while St. Joseph's falls to 8-9.
Panagiotis Koutsoloukas led the Hawks with a double-double, tallying 16 points and a game-high 17 rebounds.
Mark Courtien added 14 points while
Jeffrey Daza added 13 to round out Hunter's top scorers.
In the first half, the game swayed back and forth and was highlighted by three ties before the home team took control. St. Joseph's used the final seven minutes of the half to construct a 17-4 run and close out the period in front, 33-20.
In the second, the Bears picked up where they left off, quickly scoring seven points in the first two minutes of the stanza to take a 40-20 advantage. Hunter started chipping away however, relying on a couple of big threes from Courtien to make it a nine-point game with 12:48 to play. From there, Hunter continued its offensive onslaught, going on a 17-8 run across the next nine minutes to tie the game up at 53-53 with 3:50 remaining. Once the Hawks claimed a second-half lead the Bears refused to take the news quietly. Hunter established a five point advantage (58-53) with 2:30 but the Bears battled back twice, also tying the game at 60-60 with 39 seconds left until the Hawks claimed the victory in dramatic fashion.
Hunter ended the day shooting 36% from the field, 37% from beyond the arc and 73% from the free throw line. The Hawks' comeback effort was aided by 19 Bear turnovers which Hunter converted into 17 points.
Hunter returns to action this Wednesday, January 18 at 7pm when they welcome Medgar Evers College to the Sportsplex.
