SUNY New Paltz Spoils Hunter's Home Opener

NEW YORK, NY - SUNY New Paltz spoiled the Hunter College men's volleyball team home opener with a  3-0 (25-17, 25-23, 25-19) victory at the Hunter Sportsplex on Tuesday evening.

Hunter falls to 0-1 on the young season while New Paltz improves to 1-0.

Senior Chris Newcomb led the Hawks with 14 kills and added a service ace while fellow senior John Gemeguh added six kills on 33% attacking. As a unit, the Hawks finished the night with 30 kills on .086 attacking and two service aces.

The first set was a back and forth affair in the early goings but midway through the stanza, New Paltz gained control, taking advantage of 11 Hawk errors to earn the 25-17 victory.

In the second set, the Hawks led 11-9 before New Paltz battled back to tie things at 13-all on a Mike Van Tyne kill. From there, the visitors edged ahead, 16-13 but the Hawks closed in despite trailing, 22-21 following a New Paltz service error. Another NP service error made it a 23-22 affair but the visiting Hawks got a pair of kills from Dylan Rabidoux and Bryan Weber to take the second set, 25-23.

The third and final set was all New Paltz as the visitors jumped out to an early 10-5 advantage. Hunter did close the gap to four points (16-20) but New Paltz continued to apply offensive pressure and never relinquished the lead as they held on for the 25-19 win to take today's game.

Hunter returns to the court this Friday, January 20 when they travel to Rutgers-Newark to take part in the the Golden Dome Invitational. Hunter is slated to play NJIT on Friday at 5:30pm before facing NYU on Saturday, January 21 at 5:30pm.
