NEW YORK, NY – The Hunter College men's basketball team took advantage of a massive Medgar Evers miscue to overcome a seven point deficit in the final two minutes of the game and beat the Cougars, 64-60 at the Hunter Sportsplex on Wednesday evening.
With 2:45 left to play Hunter trailed Medgar Evers, 60-53 but Winston Douglas fouled out, giving the Hawks a one-man advantage. The Hawks wasted little time exploiting the Cougar defense as it sparked a 5-0 run in a 1:32 to pull within a point (59-58). Senior
Anthony Uter then came up with a big steal enabling
Mark Courtien to hit a three-pointer, putting the Hawks ahead by two (61-59) with 58 ticks to go.
The Cougars had an opportunity to tie, but Jovan Deare missed his second free throw at 49 seconds to keep the Hawks in front, 61-60. From there Hunter scored quickly on a
John Akinyemi layup to move in front 63-60. A foul on Akinyemi sent the senior to the line where he converted a free throw to give the Hawks a 64-60 victory.
Hunter improves to 8-8 overall and 3-2 in the CUNYAC while Medgar Evers drops to 10-8 and 1-4 in league play.
Courtien led the Hawks with 20 points and Uter added 19 while
Jeffrey Daza added 12. Hunter finished the night shooting 43% from the floor and 41% from behind the arc.
The Hawks trailed the Cougars 28-23 after Medgar Evers closed out the stanza on a 12-7 run. Hunter opened with more determination in the second, using a 17-3 run in the first six minutes to push ahead, 40-31.
The Cougars returned the favor and tied the game for the seventh time of the evening at the 10:49 mark on a three-pointer to make it 44-all before moving in front by seven with five minutes left to go. Medgar Evers maintained a seven point lead with 3:43 minutes left to play and seemed poised for the victory until the Hawks capitalized on Douglas fouling out.
Hunter returns to the court this Friday, January 20 when they travel to New Jersey to take on TCNJ at 7pm.
