Uter's Buzzer Beater Lifts Hawks Past Cardinals, 63-62

NEW YORK, NY – Senior Anthony Uter connected on a putback layup as time expired to give the Hunter College men's basketball team an exiciting 63-62 come-from-behind victory over the York College Cardinals at the Hunter Sportsplex on Wednesday evening.

The Hawks improve to 9-9 overall and 4-2 in the CUNYAC with the win while the Cardinals fall to 7-12 and 3-3 in conference action.

Mark Courtien was the leading man for Hunter, tallying 18 points to lead the squad while Uter and Panagiotis Koutsoloukas each earned double-doubles. Uter went on to finish with 13 points and 10 boards while Koutsoloukas finished with 10 each.

Despite leading, 38-30 at the end of the first, the Hawks had to battle back for tonight's hard-fought win. Hunter saw an 11-point second half lead erased by York as the Cardinals sparked a 16-9 run to cut the Hawks' lead to just two with 7:07 left to play. Hunter jumped ahead by five on a critical three from Joel Cerda as the senior drained his second of the night at 3:22 to distance the Cardinals.

Determined, York battled back within one thanks in large part to Hunter foul trouble. With 1:07 left to go, Shamir Wilkinson knocked down a pair of free throws to bring the visitors back to within one (61-60). Another Hawk foul sent the Cardinals' top scorer--William Holley to the line who then converted a pair of free throws to put the Cardinals ahead, 62-61 with 14 seconds to play. Hunter ran an out of bounds play and the initial attempt fell short before Uter's putback gave Hunter the 63-62 victory.

The Hawks shot 39% from the field but were 44% from behind the arc and overcame 18 turnovers en route to earning tonight's win.

Holley paced the Cardinals with a game-high 23 points while Wilkinson added 14.

Hunter returns to CUNYAC action this Friday, January 27 when the Hawks play host to College of Staten Island at 7pm.
