Hawks Grab Wins over Williams and US Coast Guard at NEWA-Metro Duals

BRISTOL, R.I. – The Hunter College wrestling team registered a pair of victories Saturday afternoon at the NEWA-Metro Conference Challenge Duals, defeating the US Coast Guard Academy, 30-10 and Williams, 29-19.

Overall, the Hawks went 2-1 on the day, also losing 23-18 to host Roger Williams to improve to 9-5 on the season.

Ryan Gerondel finished the day 3-0, wrestling at 133 pounds. The sophomore defeated Mike Ehlinger (RW) 8-2 before topping Anthony Signoriello (CGA), 16-0 and closed the day with a 10-5 win over Kaison Tanabe (RW).

Sean Messina was 2-1 in matches in the 141 pound division, pinning James Carroll (RW) in just 29 seconds to earn his first win. The West Islip native bumped up to the 149 weight class against the US Coast Guard Academy and earned a 5-2 victory over Fred Green. The senior grappler fell in his final match of the day, losing to Roger Williams' Ces Antista, 8-2 at 141 pounds.

Musa DeReese earned a pair of wins for the Hawks, defeating Colin Egan, 8-1 and USCGA's Mark Howard (6-1) to help the Hawks to victory.

Hunter dropped the first match of the day, albeit narrowly as Roger Williams defeated Hunter, 23-18. Despite the loss, Hunter saw strong performances from Gerondel, Messina and DeReese who each earned victories.

The Hawks rebounded in round two, defeating the US Coast Guard Academy soundly, 30-10. In addition to Messina and Gerondel's victories, Luke Pragdat pinned Virgil Moreno in 2:34 to win at 174 while Jordan Donahue (9-2) and Leon Bodden (10-2) earned victories by decision at 184 and 285 pounds respectively.

Finally, The Hawks avengened an earlier loss to Roger Williams, topping the opposing Hawks, 29-12 to close out the event. Chris Gogatz won by a 4-1 decision at 149 and Pragdat notched his second win of the afternoon with a technical pin fall in 6:03 at 174 pounds.

Hunter looks to continue its winning ways this Saturday, February 4th when it heads to York College for a tri-match against York and Elizabethtown.
