NEW YORK, N.Y.- The Hunter College wrestling team split its home tri-match on Saturday afternoon at the Sportsplex, falling to Alfred State before rebounding with a dominant victory over Kean in front of the home crowd.
Hunter opened the day with a 33-14 loss to Alfred State despite strong performances in the upper weights. Junior
Botensky Bauzile got the Hawks on the board at 133 pounds with a 16-1 technical fall over Mason Drew at the 6:20 mark. At 141 pounds, sophomore
Kenan Djokic followed with a hard-fought 12-9 sudden-victory win against Cornelius Griffin to give Hunter an early edge.
Freshman
Alimkhan Guseinov delivered one of the highlights of the dual, earning a pin at 3:00 over Pierce Tran at 197 pounds to close out Hunter's scoring against the Pioneers.
In exhibition action against Alfred State, freshman
Christopher Gliaos posted a 13-2 major decision over Jared Dolder at 157 pounds.
The Hawks quickly turned the page in the second dual, rolling to a 50-3 win over Kean. Hunter jumped out to a commanding lead with wins in the first four bouts, including a 15-9 decision by
Muhamadu Konteh at 125 pounds and forfeits at 133, 141, and 149 pounds.
Hunter added bonus points throughout the middle of the lineup, as
Anthony Coccarelli pinned Jamison Carter at 3:55 at 157 pounds and
Jack Kent followed with a 1:36 fall over Anthony Gin at 165 pounds. Freshman
Naseer Johnson earned a 19-4 technical fall at 4:14 over Koran Hinton at 184 pounds, while Guseinov capped his day with another pin, sticking Jadon McCoy at 2:18 at 197 pounds.
Hayden Roy sealed the lopsided team score with a forfeit win at heavyweight.
Additional exhibition highlights against Kean included
Isaiah Harris pinning Anthony Gin in just 0:45 at 165 pounds and
Oscar O'Donnell-Powell earning a quick 0:33 fall over Josiah Acheampong at 174 pounds.
Hunter continues its season on Jan. 31 with a quad match against Trinity College, Springfield College, and University of Bridgeport hosted by Trinity.
