Fencing Shutout at Stevens Tech MACFA Event

HOBOKEN, NJ - The Hunter College men's fencing team was shutout at the MACFA competition hosted by Stevens Tech on Sunday, January 29 as the Hawks failed to win a match, facing some stiff opposition.

University of Maryland 22, Hunter 5
Against the University of Maryland, the Terps held the Hawks scoreless in the foil while Alex Sosa, Justin Lokossou and Hunter Lackowitz each won a bout in the epee. In the sabre, Isaac Orbe captured a pair of bouts to account for the final, 22-5.

William and Mary 18, Hunter 9
The Hawks lost in both the foil and epee, narrowly falling 5-4 in each division. Nicholas Burney won three bouts and Hardley Joanis won one to keep the Hawks close in the foil. Then, in the epee, Lokossou won two bouts while Lackowitz and Sosa each picked up one win apiece to make it a 10-8 affair in favor of William and Mary. Unfortunately for the Hawks, Hunter managed to win just one bout in the sabre with Orbe earning the victory as William and Mary ran away with a 18-9 win. 

University of Virginia 21, Hunter 6
The University of Virginia shut Hunter out in the sabre, jumping ahead to a quick 9-0 lead. The Hawks would only win three bouts in the foil as Burney amassed two wins along with Jonis to make it a 15-3 affair in the Cavaliers. Finally, Sosa nabbed two wins in the epee and Lokossou captured one to account for the 21-6 loss.

John Hopkins University 25, Hunter 1
Finally, the Hawks won Lokossou win the only bout of the match in epee as the Blue Jays kept Hunter off the boards in both the sabre and foil to capture the 25-1 victory.

Hunter returns to action this Saturday, Feb. 4 when it travels to the Eric Sollee Invitational hosted by Brandeis University.
