NEW YORK, NY – The Hunter College men's volleyball team beat Brooklyn College in three straight sets (25-6, 25-16, 25-17) to improve to 3-0 in the CUNYAC at the Hunter Sportsplex on Thursday evening.
Hunter (4-6) got an impressive performance out of
Braien Otsla who finished with a team-high seven kills on .400 attacking while
Christopher Newcomb and
Eric Barty each added five and four kills respectively. As a team, the Hawks managed 30 kills in the three-game match, recording six service aces and four blocks. Additionally, the Hawks capitalized on eight Bulldog service errors and six reception errors to earn tonight's victory.
The Hawks dominated from the onset in the opening set, pushing ahead 7-2 on a
Jonathan Park kill. An attack error on the ensuing play would make it 8-2 in Hunter's favor before the Bulldogs notched just their third point in the match. Hunter took advantage of a three Bulldog attack errors as well as a bad set and two kills from Barty to push in front 15-4 before going on to take the set, 25-6.
The start of the second set was night and day from the first, as Brooklyn continually matched the Hawks point for point before taking an 8-6 advantage. The Hawks responded immediately, scoring four straight points to move ahead, 10-8. After the Hawks gained control of the set and established a 19-13 lead,
Nino Hot earned a kill and
Jerin Kallickal registered three to help the Hawks to capture the 25-15 victory.
The third and final set again began in favor of Brooklyn as the Bulldogs led 8-7 forcing yet another Hunter comeback. The Hawks quickly scored four points to edge ahead 11-8 but the Bulldogs retailiated, tying the game at 11-all. A series of Brooklyn errors proved critical as four-straight made it a 15-11 affair in Hunter's favor. After a HC service error broke that streak, giving the Bulldogs a point, the Hawks got back on task, pushing ahead 20-12 to put the match out of reach.
The Bulldogs dropped to 1-6 overall and 0-4 in the conference with tonight's loss. Alexander Shlivko led the visitors with a game-high nine kills.
The Hunter College volleyball team travels to Springfield, MA to take on Springfield College this Saturday, Feb. 18 at 3pm.
