NEW YORK, NY - The Hunter College men's volleyball team earned its first win of the season today as the Hawks defeated the visiting Medgar Evers Cougars, 3-0 (25-10, 25-7, 25-10) at the Sportsplex on Saturday morning.
Hunter improves to 1-5 and 1-0 in the CUNYAC while Medgar Evers suffers its first loss, dropping to 0-1 overall and in league play.
Chris Newcomb finished the day with six kills on a perfect 1.000 attacking percentage while
Jerin Kallickal and
Nino Hot each added five kills as the Hawks finished the day with 32 on .605 attacking and 12 service aces.
Stanley Martinez led the Hawks with 12 assists.
The Hawks jumped out to a quick 10-5 lead in the first set, before a pair of service aces from Kallickal made it a 12-5 affair. Hunter outscored the Cougars, 13-5 to close out the 25-10 win. In set two, the Hawks dominated early and oftenm sprinting out to a 7-3 lead. Three kills and a Medgar attack error later put Hunter in front by 11-3 before a Cougar kill made it 11-4. Leading, 15-5, Hunter capitalized on a Cougar service error to spark a 6-0 run and push ahead 21-5 before closing out the set, 25-7. In the final frame, Hunter closed out the frame on a 8-1 tilt to take the set, 25-10 and win the game in straight sets.
Hunter returns to action this Tuesday, Feb. 7th when they host Philadelphia Biblical at 7pm.
