YORK, PA – Despite some notable victories over ranked wrestlers, the Hunter College wrestling team suffered a pair of tough defeats to ranked opponents, falling 22-18 against #15 York College and 25-21to #21 Elizabethtown on Saturday afternoon.

Hunter falls to 9-7 on the year with the two losses but increases its chances to send several wrestlers to the NCAAs.

In a 22-18 loss against #15 York, the Hawks won five matches including a big win for Sean Messina who topped the #2 ranked wrestler in the nation as he beat Chris Albright in a 3-2 decision at 141 pounds. Ryan Gernodal defeated Jimmy Ciampi in a 6-1 decision at 133 pounds and Jesse Bader won at 165 pounds with a 3-2 decision over Trent Bond. Finally, Musa DeReese earned a 8-2 decision over Cody Ambrose and then Leon Bodden pinned DeJour Hood in an impressive 24 seconds to close out the match.

Hunter also won five matches against #21 Elizabethtown as it suffered a narrow 25-21 defeat. At 133, Gerondal increased his chances of going to the NCAAs with another solid victory, this time, defeating Nick Grimm in a 3-2 decision at 133 pounds. Messina Picked up his second win also, pinning Kyle McNulty in 2:23 at 141 pounds before Chris Gogatz defeated Michael Henning at 149, pinning him in 2:12 to give Hunter a 15-4 lead.

Elizabethtown came back to win the next four matches and take a 25-15 lead before the Hawks nabbed two wins in the final two weight divisions. DeReese earned a 1-1 victory in quadruple overtime thanks to a 36 second riding time advantage at 197 pounds. Then, Bodden beat Jeremy Reith with a 4-2 decision at 285 to make it a 25-21 affair in favor of the opposition.

The Hawks return to action this Saturday, with a 12 pm match against King's College at the Hunter Sportsplex.
