NEW YORK, NY – The Hunter College men's volleyball team used a pair of dominant performances to beat a pair of CUNYAC opponents and remain unblemished in league play as Hunter knocked off John Jay College, 3-0 (25-8,25-13,25-14) before besting Brooklyn College, 3-0 (25-11, 25-11, 25-15) in today's multi-match hosted by CCNY.
Hunter improves to 8-7 overall and 6-0 in the CUNYAC to remain atop the league standings.
The Hawks were nothing short of impressive against the Bloodhounds as the squad finished with 33 kills on .474 attacking, registering a season-high 13 service aces in the victory.
John Gemegah led the squad with eight kills on an impressive .800 attacking while
Eric Barty added seven and
Christopher Newcomb registered six kills, adding a team-high three service aces.
Attack-wise, the Hawks were errorless in the first set as they managed 14 kills on 17 total attacks for a .824 attack percentage to take the first set, 25-8. In the second, Hunter continued its dominance, committing just two errors to win, 25-13 before closing out the third and final set, 25-14 with 13 kills to send the Bloodhounds packing.
Hunter's stalwart defense limited the Bloodhounds to just 17 kills on .083 attacking in addition to the Bloodhounds suffering 13 reception errors.
In the 3-0 victory over the Bulldogs, Newcomb led the charge, finishing the match with 10 kills on .500 attacking.
Jerin Kallickal and
Braien Otsla each added seven kills apiece while Gemegah notched three service aces.
Hunter made quick work of the Bulldogs in the first set, defeating Brooklyn 25-11 with 17 kills on .609 attacking. The second set saw the Hawks take another 25-11 victory, this time as Hunter managed 11 kills on .318 attacking. In the final set, the Hawks won 25-15 to take the match as Hunter notched 15 kills on .500 attacking.
Hunter limited Brooklyn to just 17 kills in three sets on -.056 attacking and forced six reception errors.
The Hawks return to the Sportsplex this Tuesday, March 6 when they host Vassar College at 5pm before taking on York College at 7pm.
