Hawks Uncap #10 Brewers and Defeat Cardinals in Doubleheader Sweep

BOX SCORE - Vassar
BOX SCORE - York

NEW YORK, NY –
The Hunter College men's volleyball team was outstanding as it defeated visiting United Volleyball Conference powerhouse #10 Vassar College, 3-1 (25-16, 22-25, 27-25, 27-25) before handing York College its first loss on the season in straight sets, 3-0 (25-23, 25-16, 25-16) in a doubleheader to run its win streak to six-straight matches on Tuesday evening at the Sportsplex.

With the wins, Hunter improves to 10-7 overall and 7-0 in the CUNYAC where the Hawks perch atop the standings in first place.

The Hawks played fiercely against the Brewers taking the first set in convincing fashion with a 25-16 victory. But the Brewers bounced back to take the second set 25-22. Hunter—ever resilient, would battle from behind twice with identical scores of 27-25 in sets three and four to claim the four-set win.

The Hawks managed a season-high 56 kills against Vassar on .345 attacking in addition to eight blocks. Reigning AVCA Division III National Player of the Week, Christopher Newcomb proved his worth, amassing 17 kills on .424 attacking in addition to a pair of blocks. Eric Barty and Braien Otsla were also dominant in the win as they notched 14 and 11 kills respectively.

Vassar was led by Matthew Elgin who finished with 20 kills on .400 attacking.

After a brief break, the Hawks picked up where they left off as they transitioned into a conference match-up against York. Hunter dominated in the first set against the Cardinals (11-9, 6-1 CUNYAC), establishing a 24-16 lead in the first set. However, York rattled off eight consecutive points to pull within one, 24-23 before Newcomb registered a kill, enabling Hunter to take the set, 25-23.

In the second set, Hunter took advantage of the Cardinals defense to jump out to a 9-2 lead which provided the Hawks with a solid cushion. Hunter would close the set out on a 6-2 run to earn the 25-16 win.

The Hawks managed the same result in the third set, winning 25-16 thanks in large part to a six point run midway through the stanza. With both teams tied at 13-13, three Hawk kills coupled with as many Cardinal errors, enabled the Hawks to push ahead, 19-13. Then, with the Hawks in front, 21-14, after York scored two points, the Cardinals committed four straight attack errors as Hunter took the match in three-straight sets.

Newcomb led the charge against York, compiling 17 kills and a pair of solo blocks while Barty added six kills. Otsla closed out the contest with four kills and a match-high three service aces. As a squad, the Hawks finished with 29 kills, five service aces and six blocks.

Bryan Williams finished with nine kills to lead the Cardinals.

The Hawks return to action this Thursday, March 8 when they host CCNY at 6pm.
