BOX SCORE Staten Island, N.Y. - On Sunday, February 17, the #8 Hunter men's basketball team took on the top ranked Dolphins of Staten Island in the opening round of the CUNYAC Tournament. After falling behind by three at the half, the Hawks fell victim to a Dolphin surge in the second, eventually falling by a final score of 89-80. With the loss, Hunter closes the books on their 2012-13 season with an 8-15, 5-11 CUNYAC record while CSI advances with a 20-5, 14-2 CUNYAC mark.
Jerrell Antley led the way for the Purple and Gold with a 24 point effort to lead three teammates in double figures Peter Koutoloukas and
Brian Kruger chipped in with an even split of a combined 30 points while
Lorenzo Brown did his part with 11 points. The Hawks lost the battle on the boards pulling down 29 rebounds while their counterparts grabbed 33. However, as a team, they were 11 of 21 from behind the arc (.524) and shot 47.5 percent from the field.
CSI's Bloochy Magloire drained a game high 33 points and went a perfect 14-14 from the charity stripe. Jon Chadwick-Myers followed up with 24 points of his own while teammate Javon Cox posted a double-double with 17 points and 11 boards. The Dolphin's shot 51.8 percent from the field and were 27-31 from the charity stripe.
The Hawks took the early lead and were out in front for nearly 14 minutes of the first half. Koutsoloukas made good on a layup in the paint at the 11:39 mark that sparked an 8-1 Hawk run that was punctuated with a Kruger triple less than two minutes later to give them a nine point cushion at 22-13.
However, a pair of free throws by Bloochy and a layup by Matthew Van Manen swung the momentum in the host's favor as they took their first lead of the game. It was short lived as efforts from Kruger and Koutsoloukas quickly gave Hunter the lead once again.
After swapping the lead three more times in the closing 2:49, it was the Dolphins that entered halftime with a three point cushion after scoring the final four points of the half to go up 36-33.
In the second, CSI stayed ahead by at least four points until a Brown layup at the 10:23 mark closed the gap to three with a bucket in the paint. However, the Dolphins slowly began to pull away and blossomed their lead to double digits with under three minutes to go.
Down by 14 with 1:13 left to play, the Hawks tried to put together a late run and, despite cutting the 14 point deficit in half, would get no closer and fall by a nine point margin, 89-80.
The Hawks close the books on their 2012-13 season with an 8-15, 5-11 record in CUNYAC.
