BOX SCORE

New York, N.Y. - The men's volleyball team took on the CCNY Beavers in a CUNYAC Conference contest earlier this evening. After a tightly contested first set, the Hawks managed to finish off the hosts in the following two games to mark their ninth win in the past 10 outings, 33-31, 25-11, 25-21. In victory, Hunter advances to 10-8, 9-1 CUNYAC while CCNY slips to 9-12, 4-6 CUNYAC.

For the Hawks, Braien Otsla posted a game high 17 kills on 25 attempts with just four errors. Moshood Jinad served up nine kills while Matthew Ng added eight. Nino Hot, Stanley Martinez and Alexandru Barbulescu combined for 13 kills. Martinez registered a game high 33 assists while Eric Lodde recorded 10 digs on defense.

CCNY was led by Brian Yik Lim with 13 kills while teammate Rubin Taipi chipped in with 11 of his own.  Anthony Reyes and Bryan Hu combined for 25 assists in the loss.

In the first set, Hunter started strong with an early 8-4 run. The four point cushion would not hold as either team held more than a two point advantage after that through the end of the set. The back and forth affair featured 21 ties; 13 of which came in the final points.

With the game knotted at 24 all, CCNY had a chance to close out the game as an error from Jinad made it point game. However, through the efforts of Ng and Hot, Hunter turned the tables and led 27-26. The final tie came at the 31-31 mark. Ng's kill got the Hawks the go ahead point and then they were able to seal the deal as Reyes made an attack error, giving the Purple and Gold the 33-31 first set win.

Using the momentum built from the first, Hunter pushed out to a 16-7 lead in the second and furthered their lead after five straight CCNY attack errors to put the score out of reach at 24-10. Another costly error by CCNY, their ninth of the set, gave the Hawks a 25-11 second set win.

In an attempt to get one back, CCNY came out firing in the third and final set. They jumped out to the early 7-3 lead but surrendered four straight points to even the slate. The Beavers hung around and kept it close, but fell victim to a 9-3 run in the final stages of the set which was exclamated by two back-to-back Otsla kills.

The men's volleyball team returns to action on Thursday, March 21 when they travel to the Bronx to take on Lehman College in a CUNYAC matchup at 7pm.
