Hawks Split At MIT Scramble

Cambridge, MA – The Hunter men's volleyball team wrapped up their 2014 regular season at the MIT Scramble Tournament. The Hawks played four matches, two on Friday and two on Saturday.

On Friday night the Hawks took on tournament host #5 MIT and lost 3-1, posting scores of 11-25, 25-18, 22-25, 18-25.
Steven Tarquinio smashed 12 kills and had five block assists, while hitting .500. Ben Crusinberry had nine kills, six digs with a .400 hitting percentage. Alexandru Barbulescu and Matthew Ng both had eight kills.

Stanley Martinez dished out 40 assists and Colin Horn and Ng each had 10 digs.

In their 2nd match, the Hawks swept Southern Vermont College, posting scores of 25-21, 25-21, 25-18 in victory.

Crusinberry led the Hawks with 11 kills and a solo block and block assist, while hitting .600. Tarquinio had nine kills and Barbelescu had eight kills with a .889 hitting percentage.

Martinez set up his teammates beautifully with his 31 assists. Ng, Horn and Eric Lodde each had seven digs.

On Saturday, the Hawks took on two top-10 teams.

First up was # 7 UC-Santa Cruz who swept the Hawks 3-0, posting scores of 18-25, 19-25, and 22-25.

Barbelescu led the Hawks with 10 kills and a .600 hitting percentage. Martinez had 25 assists to go along with eight kills. Crusinberry and Ng each had seven kills.

In the final match of the tournament, the Hawks defeated #9 Elmira College 3-1, posting scores of 19-25, 25-13, 25-22, 26-24.

Barbelescu once again had double-digit kills with 12 and Cruisinberry smashed 10 kills. Martinez had 33 assists in victory. Crusinberry was named to the All-Tournament team for his performance.

The Hawks went 2-2 in the tournament improving their record to 16-13 and they start post-season play Tuesday when they host John Jay in the CUNYAC Quarter-finals. The match is scheduled to begin at 6pm.
