BOX SCORE 2 UNION, NJ –The Hunter men's volleyball team split in both of their matches at the 2
nd day of the Kean Winter Tournament on Saturday afternoon.
The Hawks swept Brooklyn College 3-0 in their first match of the day; they then lost 0-3 to Elmira College putting the Hawks record at 1-2.
Hunter College 3 Brooklyn College 0 (25-9, 25-3, 25-11)The Hawks dominated their conference foe right from the start scoring 14 of the first 18 points of the match. The team had nine kills en route to a .615 hitting percentage.
The second set began like the first did with the Hawks having an even better this time. The team combined for 12 kills and a .800 hitting percentage.
The Hawks controlled the third set as well only surrendering points on service errors.
Ben Crusinberry and
Benjamin Cassidy led the Hawks attack as they each smashed eight kills, each added a block.
Brandon Kohler contributed seven kills.
Jon Peter Sardea set up his teammates for 17 assists while
Nicolas Sanchez had 10.
Steven Tarquinio led the Hawks with four service aces.
Elmira College 3 Hunter 0 (25-13, 25-18, 25-22)The Hawks fell behind early in the first set trailing 14-5 early on. The team rallied to pull within 15-10 but they would get no closer as the Soaring Eagles would close out the set on a 10-3 run.
The set began very close as each team went on back and forth mini runs but with the score 16-13, the Soaring Eagles began to distance themselves.
In the third set the Hawks took an early 5-4 lead as both teams would battle back and forth when with the score 18-17, an Elmira kills sprung the Soaring Eagles to a clinching set victory.
The Hawks return to action Friday January 23 when they will travel and participate at the Juanita Tournament. They will take on Thiel College, Juniata and Hilbert College.
