BOX SCORE 2 NEW YORK, NY -,The Hunter men's volleyball team went 2-0 at the CUNYAC multi-match on Monday morning defeating #9 Baruch College 3-2 in an epic 5 set match and then sweeping Lehman College in three sets. The two wins put the Hawks at 8-7 overall and 5-0 in CUNYAC play.
Hunter 3 Baruch 2,The Hawks opened up the match dropping the first set to the Bearcats 25-19. The Hawks battled hard in the set but were unable to overcome an early deficit. The Hawks attack was strong in the first set totaling 14 kills while hitting .216 as a team.,
The second set began close with the teams trading points. The Hawks tied the set numerous times early on but were never able to take the lead from the Bearcats. The Beacats opened up a 17-11 lead in the set but the Hawks dug deep and continued to play strong at the net, finally tying the game at 22. The Hawks surrendered back-to-back kills giving Baruch a 24-22 lead looking to close out the set and take a commanding 2-0 lead. The Hawks finally took their first lead of the set 25-24 after two straight errors by Baruch. The Hawks would close out the 27-25 victory on a kill by
Mehmet Ozturk and a block by Gary Anderson Jr and
Steven Tarquinio.
The third set started much like the previous two with the Bearcats controlling play early and limiting the Hawks attacks. Despite leading for much of the set, the Bearcats weren't able to put any distance between themselves and the Hawks with their largest lead being two points. With the score 20-18 Beacats, the Hawks dug in and fired off five straight points to take a 23-20 lead.
Brandon Kohler would close out the 25-22 victory with a kill.
The Hawks took control early in the fourth set taking an early 4-0 lead. The Bearcats would respond and tie the game at 10 and would then go on a run to take a 21-15 lead. The Hawks wouldn't give up fighting back to get within four points but the Bearcats closed out the set taking a 25-21 victory.
In the deciding set both teams came out aggressive as they traded points The Hawks used a mini four point run to take a 10-7 lead, leading to a Baruch timeout. After the timeout the Hawks maintained their aggressiveness and strong net play with Kohler and Tarquinio each recording key kills to secure the Hawks 15-12 victory.
Kohler led the Hawks with 15 kills, four digs and a .400 hitting percentage. Tarquinio added 14 kills, six digs, two solo blocks and four block assists, while
Ben Crusinberry added 12 kills. Gary Anderson Jr was excellent dishing out 42 assists and 17 digs.,
Hunter 3 Lehman 0,The Hawks dominated the first set right from the start taking advantage of Lightning errors at the net, scoring seven straight points on Lightning errors turning a 5-2 lead into a 12-2 lead. The Hawks would take their opportunities for strong attack play closing out the set with kills by Crusinberry and
Benjamin Cassidy.
In the second set both teams began by trading points with the Hawks seizing control turning a 7-6 lead into a 14-6 lead thanks to strong net and service play. The Lightning were unable to withstand the Hawks attack as they committed three straight errors to close out the set.
The Hawks once again came out ready to play dominating play from the beginning jumping out to a 10-4 lead. The six point margin would be to much for the Lightning to overcome as the Hawks closed out the set and victory with an
Austen Rerick kill.
Tarquinio led the attack with eight kills and three block assists, while Kohler added seven kills and five block assists.,
The Hawks return to action Thursday February 19 when they will take on York College in a rematch of last year's CUNYAC semi-finals. The match is scheduled to begin at 7pm.
