BOX SCORE MAHWAH, NJ - The Hunter men's volleyball team won their third straight match with a five set victory over Ramapo College. The Hawks improve to 14-8 on the season.
The Hawks won by the scores of 17-25, 25-23, 25-22, 22-25 & 19-17.
After scoring the first two points of the set, the Hawks would surrender seven straight points allowing the Roadrunners to take a 7-2 lead and forcing coach Bello into calling a timeout. The Hawks continued to scuffle throughout the remainder of the set and with limited attacking attempts, they fell behind by as much as nine points.
The Hawks started the second set staying neck and neck with the Roadrunners. Both teams were attacking at the net leading to points via kill and attacking error. With tied at 12, the Roadrunners would go on a run to take a 20-15 lead. After the teams traded points to make the score 21-16, the Hawks would turn it on scoring seven of the next eight points to take a 23-22 lead. The Hawks would close out the 25-23 victory on a block by
Brandon Kohler and
Ben Crusinberry.
Both teams battled back and forth in the third set but the Hawks took control, growing their 7-6 lead into a 16-9 lead thanks to strong play at the net both offensively, with kills from
Steven Tarquinio and Kohler and defensively with blocks from Crusinberry, Tarquinio and
Mehmet Ozturk. The Roadrunners would cut a 22-17 Hawks lead to within two points at 23-21 but the Hawks would close out the set with kills from Gary Anderson Jr and
Benjamin Cassidy.
The entire fourth set was close all the way through with neither team taking more than a three point lead. With the set tied at 20 apiece, the Roadrunners would score three straight points forcing the Hawks to call a timeout with the score 23-20. The Roadrunners would close out the set with back-to-back kills.
In the final set, the Hawks would control the action early, the Hawks would push their lead to 11-8 thanks to kills by Ozturk and Crusinberry. The Roadrunners would respond though cutting the lead to 11-10 forcing a Hawks timeout. The Hawks respond taking their lead to 14-11, on the verge of victory but they would have to wait a little longer as the Roadrunners would tie the score at 14. They would eventually have match point at 17-16, but that would be as close as they would get to victory. The Hawks used their strength winning the last three points with two kills and a game winning block by Tarquinio and Anderson Jr.
Tarquinio led the attack with 12 kills and seven total blocks, Kohler chipped in with 11 kills and Ozturk had eight kills. Crusinberry was solid all around with six kills, eight digs and five total blocks. Anderson Jr, totaled 35 assists and nine digs.
The Hawks return to action on Thursday when they will travel to the Bronx to take on CUNYAC foe Lehman College at 6pm.
