BOX SCORE 2 NEW YORK, NY - The Hunter men's volleyball team saw their four match winning streak come to an end on Saturday afternoon as the Hawks dropped both of their matches to #1 Stevens Tech & Stevenson University. The Hawks were swept by the #1 Ducks by the scores 16-25, 13-25, 18-25. The 2014 ECAC Tournament runner-up Mustangs defeated the Hawks 3-1 by the scores of 25-23, 20-25, 15-25, 25-27.
Stevens Tech 3 Hunter 0After dropping the first two sets, the Hawks and Ducks engaged in a tight battle in the third. The Hawks would tie the score at 6-6 after a bad set by Ryan Brandow. The Ducks would go on a run, growing their lead to 12-7 but a kill from
Mehmet Ozturk and back-to-back blocks by
Steven Tarquinio and
Ben Crusinberry made the score 12-10. Gary Anderson Jr would record a kill later in the set to make the score 18-14 Ducks, but that would be as close as the Hawks would get for the remainder of the set as the Ducks would close out the Hawks with a 25-18 match clinching victory.
Tarquinio had a solid overall game with seven kills, four total blocks and 9.5 points, Ozturk would record five kills and Crusinberry and
Brandon Kohler would each have four kills.
Stevenson 3 Hunter 1The Mustangs took a lead early on in the first set and the Hawks were unable to wrestle it away. The Hawks would tie the score up at 9-9 after back-to-back points, one on a kill by Kohler and the next on an attack error by Michael Fehrs. Tarquinio struck once again with a kill making the score 12-11 and the Mustangs had another attack error to tie the score at 12. The teams would go back and forth for the remainder of the set with the Hawks finally taking the lead after a block from
Benjamin Cassidy and Kohler made the score 23-22, Crusinberry would smash home a kill giving the Hawks set point. Kohler would close the Mustangs would with a kill giving the Hawks a 25-23 set victory.
After dropping the second and third sets, the Hawks and Mustangs would play an epic fourth set. Much like the first set, this one went back and forth for the duration. The Hawks would take a three point lead at 10-7 after a five point run that included kills from Kohler, Cassidy and Crusinberry as well as blocks from Anderson Jr, Kohler and Cassidy. The Hawks would get set point after three straight kills, one from Ozturk and two from Crusinberry. The Mustangs would respond winning four of the next five points to clinch the match victory.
Tarquinio led the Hawks attack with a season-high 20 kills, scoring 21 points, while Kohler chipped in with 15 kills and four total blocks, scoring 17.5 points. Crusinberry had a solid overall game with eight kills and seven digs. Anderson Jr chipped in, in all areas with 40 assists and 10 digs.
The Hawks now sit at ,15-10 on the season. They will return to action Thursday March 19 when they will host CUNYAC foe College of Staten Island at 6pm.
