Hawks Take Two At CUNYAC Tri-Match

Defeat York & CCNY To Remain Undefeated In CUNYAC Play

NEW YORK, NY - The Hunter College men's volleyball team extended their CUNYAC winning streak to 14 games on Saturday afternoon by defeating York College and CCNY at a CUNYAC Multi-match hosted by CCNY. The Hawks improve to 19-11 overall and 14-0 in CUNYAC play.

The Hawks won the first two sets against the Cardinals 25-19 and used an efficient attack in both sets to defeat the Cardinals. Steven Tarquinio was perfect in the first set nailing five kills on his five attacks. Brandon Kohler was equally impressive for the Hawks in the first set smashing four kills of his own on only four attacks. As a team in the first set the Hawks had 14 kills on just 23 attacks. The second set was equally as impressive for the Hawks as they totaled 13 kills on 31 attacks to defeat the Cardinals 25-19.

In the third set the Hawks were once again efficient with their attacks led by Tarquinio's four kills on four attacks. Mehmet Ozturk had four of his seven kills in the third set and Kohler added three more kills to lead the Hawks to a clinching 25-16 victory.

Tarquinio led the Hawks with 12 kills and six total blocks, while Kohler chipped in with 10 kills. Freshman Gary Anderson Jr, continued his stellar season as the Hawks setter, totaling 24 assists to go along with three kills.

After dropping the first set 25-15, the Hawks would respond coming back and dominating the second and third sets 25-14 and 25-17. In the second set after falling behind 9-8, the Hawks would regroup to take control of the set going on a 12-3 run to take an 20-12 lead thanks to kills from Kohler and Benjamin Cassidy. The Hawks would close out the set on kills from Cassidy and Kohler to earn the 25-14 victory.

The third set was back and forth throughout the early portion. The Hawks would take a 16-13 lead after kill by Kohler forcing a CCNY timeout. The Hawks continued to pressure the Beavers into attack errors stretching the lead to 20-15. Closing out the set, would be Kohler and Matthew Zukowski smashing kills to give the Hawks a 25-17 victory.

The fourth set went back and forth early on but the Hawks would take a 10-7 lead on a Joseph Muir kill forcing the Beavers into calling a timeout. After the time out the Hawks would continue to hold a lead, growing it to as large as five points at 20-15. Down the stretch, Kohler and Tarquinio would pace the Hawks, each recording a kill to secure a clinching 25-22 victory.

Kohler led the Hawks with 15 kills and a .583 hitting percentage, while Tarquinio totaled nine kills and a .261 hitting percentage. Ben Crusinberry played an solid overall game recording eight kills and seven digs.

The Hawks close out the regular season with a matchup against #10 Baruch College on Tuesday March 31. A victory by the Hawks would clinch the #1 seed for the CUNYAC Tournament, which starts Tuesday April 10.,
