BOX SCORE New York, NY - Hunter College men's basketball fell to New York University on Sunday in a non-conference match up that ended with a score of 68-52.
The Hawks are now 4-3 overall and 2-0 in conference play after winning four-straight games before Sunday's loss.
The Violets got the early advantage, leading by a few points in the first five minutes of the game. Trailing by eight points, Hunter started to close the lead as
Mamadou Sakho hit a jumper and
Gerard Carty scored four-straight free throws to make the score 13-11.
From there NYU went on a 8-0 run, but Hunter's
Amer Lukac ended it with a three-pointer at the 6:30 minute mark.Â
The Violets began to open up the game to lead by 14 in the remaining minutes of the half, but Lukac and Carty combined for six points in the last two minutes to make the score 29-21 at halftime.
Lukac led the Hawks in the first half with eight points as the team shot 25 percent from the floor.Â
The second half was opened by a shot from behind the arc from Sakho, but the Violets quickly matched that with a three-pointer of their own. The Hawks managed to close NYU's lead to just nine points when Sakho, Lukac,
Matt Franks and
Gio Gabbidon each found baskets with 11 minutes to play.Â
Carty and Franks then hit three-straight free throws to trail by just six points at the 10:13 minute mark. NYU went on a 6-2 run to go back up but a three-pointer from Franks with five minutes to play gave the Violets just a seven-point advantage.Â
Unfortunately that would be the closest the Hawks would get as NYU closed out the game in the last few minutes to win, 68-52.
Lukac led the Hawks with 13 points, while Franks followed with 12 points and a team-high nine rebounds. Carty added ten points in the loss as Hunter shot 31.3 percent from the field.Â
Hunter returns to action when they travel to John Jay for an 8 p.m. game.
