BOX SCORE 3 Union, NJ - Hunter College men's volleyball opened up the season with three wins after defeating Cairn University, Endicott College and Benedictine University on Thursday and Friday of the Kean Winter Classic, dropping just one set in the tournament.Â
The Hawks have not started the year 3-0 since the 2008 season when they won an ECAC Championship.Â
Hunter 3, Cairn 0
The Hawks kicked off the year with a win over Cairn in three sets with scores of 25-20, 25-18 and 25-12.
Steven Tarquinio and
Brandon Kohler led the fight with nine kills each. Kohler committed no errors on that match for a .600 hitting percentage.
Michael Jazgarski added eight kills, while
Nicolas Sanchez tallied 32 assists in the win.
Joseph Muir paced the Purple and Gold on defense with 11 digs, followed by
Blake Hogans seven. The team recorded a .356 hitting percentage while holding the Highlanders to a mark of just .028.
Hunter 3, Endicott 1
The Hawks took the first two sets against Endicott with scores of 25-16 and 25-20, but dropped the third to the Gulls 25-22. The Purple and Gold came back in a close fourth set to win 25-23 and take the match.
Ben Crusinberry recorded a team-high 19 kills and was followed by Jazgarski's 12. Kohler added 11 in the victory. Sanchez continued to lead the Hawks with 47 assists and Muir picked up 20 digs.
Hunter 3, Benedictine 0
Hunter finished off the Kean Classic with a 3-0 win over Benedictine, closing out the match with scores of 25-19, 25-17 and 25-20.Â
Crusinberry and Tarquinio combined for 22 kills with Crusinberry notching a team-high 12 in the victory. Tarquinio had a team-high six blocks for half of Hunter's total of 12 in the match. Sanchez tallied 26 assists and seven kills, while Muir recorded nine digs as the team hit .333 percent on the match.
The squad returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 21 when they face Baruch College and Marymount University in a tri-match hosted at the Hunter Sportsplex.
