BOX SCORE Union, N.J. - Hunter College men's volleyball continued a nine-match winning streak on Wednesday night in the defeat of #10 ranked Kean University in three sets with scores of 26-24, 25-19 and 25-21.
The Hawks improve to 14-2 this season and are currently undefeated in City University of New York Athletic Conference play.
The Purple and Gold started the first set by jumping out to a 7-2 lead, featuring kills from
Benjamin Cassidy and
Michael Jazgarski. The Cougars responded with five-straight points to tie the game, but Hunter continued to chip away at the score, leading by a few points for most of the set. Â
Kean was able to tie the score at 20 and then pull ahead 24-22, but the Hawks found a way to get the win as
Steven Tarquinio and Jazgarski recorded kills to lead the Hawks to a 26-24 first set victory.
Hunter dominated the second set early on, eventually leading 22-12. The Cougars went on a small run to trail by just five points, but the Hawks finished with a kill from
Ben Crusinberry to take the second, 25-19.
The Hawks struggled to maintain a lead for much of the third until a kill from Tarquinio gave Hunter a 21-19 lead and sparked a run. The Hawks wrapped up the match with kills from Cassidy, Jazgarski and
Brandon Kohler to record a 25-21 victory and complete the sweep.
Jazgarski paced the Hawks on offense with ten kills, followed by Crusinberry's eight. Tarquinio added six kills and just one error to record a team-high .625 hitting percentage. Joe Muir and
Nicolas Sanchez combined for 14 digs in the match, while Sanchez tallied 30 assists.
The squad recorded a .264 hitting percentage while holding the Cougars to a mark of just .074.Â
The team returns to action this weekend when they travel to Springfield College to take on two ranked opponents.
