BOX SCORE New York, NY - Hunter College men's volleyball got an exciting win on Thursday night, taking down #7 ranked New York University in four sets with scores of 25-14, 25-20, 17-25 and 25-23. The Hawks also took the time to honor their four seniors in
Brandon Kohler, Benjamin Crusinberry,
Steven Tarquinio and
Nicolas Sanchez before the match.
The #12 ranked Hawks improve to 23-5 and remain 7-0 in CUNYAC play.
Hunter started the first set by scoring five-straight points and then jumping out to an 18-9 lead. The Hawks closed it out in dominating fashion with kills from
Benjamin Cassidy and
Ben Crusinberry to take the first 25-14.
The Purple and Gold continued their strong play in the second set, immediately taking a 17-7 lead. The Violets got back into the match by going on a 10-1 run to trail by just one point, but the Hawks found five-straight points off kills from Cassidy and
Steven Tarquinio, eventually getting a 25-20 victory.
The third set was much closer as neither team could hold onto the lead. NYU managed to finish off the set with a 6-1 run to win 25-17 and make the match score 2-1.
The Hawks struck first in the fourth set, but the Violets stayed with them and then took a 12-11 lead. Hunter responded with four straight points and held onto a two-point lead until the Violets tied the score at 21. From there the Hawks capitalized on four NYU errors to seal the 25-23 set win and get a 3-1 victory.
Tarquinio led the team with 11 kills and no errors for a .846 hitting percentage.
Michael Jazgarski and Cassidy followed with eight kills each.
Nicolas Sanchez tallied 34 assists and a team-high 10 digs, while
Joseph Muir followed with nine digs.
The Hawks return to action on April 4 when they travel to Lehman College for a 6 p.m. match.
