Men's Volleyball Defeats #7 Wentworth at Springfield Tri-Match

Hawks Go 1-1 at Tri-Match

BOX SCORE 1 | BOX SCORE 2 Springfield, MA - Hunter College men's volleyball took down #7 Wentworth Institute of Technology on Saturday before falling to #1 Springfield College at the tri-match.

The Hawks improve to 15-3 this season. Their loss to Springfield ends a 10-match winning streak.

Hunter 3, Wentworth 2
The Purple and Gold started off the day with a five-set win over #7 ranked Wentworth, featuring scoreS of 22-25, 25-22, 28-26, 14-25 and 16-14.

Down 1-0 to start the second set, Hunter fought to maintain a solid lead, pulling ahead 20-19 after three-straight Hunter kills from Michael Jazgarski, Benjamin Cassidy and Ben Crusinberry. The Leopards tied up the score at 20, but Hunter outscored them 5-3 in the remaining points to get the 25-22 victory.

The Leopards took the first lead of the third set, but the Hawks made it another close one, tying the score 18 times. With Hunter trailing 24-23, Jazgarski notched two-straight kills to take the lead, but Wentworth responded with two points of their own to make the score 26-25. From there the Hawks capitalized on three Leopard errors, taking the third, 28-26.

The Purple and Gold fell behind early in the fourth, allowing Wentworth to take the set, 25-14.

In the fifth and final set the Hawks trailed for the majority of the time before coming back from a three-point deficit as Cassidy and Steven Tarquinio combined for three kills to get the team back in the match.

With the score tied at 14, Crusinberry closed out the victory with a service ace as the Hawks won, 16-14 to take the match in five.

Tarquinio led the Hawks with 17 kills, while recording a team-high .406 hitting percentage. Crusinberry followed with 15 kills and ten digs as Jazgarski and Brandon Kohler each notched nine kills.

Nicolas Sanchez tallied 51 assists in the win, adding ten digs, while Joseph Muir led the Purple and Gold on defense with 13 digs. Kohler added a team-high six blocks in the victory.

Springfield 3, Hunter 0
The #1 ranked team in the country handed the Hawks a three-set loss later in the day with scores of 25-13, 25-16 and 25-13.

The Hawks were held to just 20 kills with Jazgarski and Crusinberry combining for ten in the loss.

The squad returns to action on Wednesday, March 8 when they host Stevens Tech at 6 p.m.
