BOX SCORE New York, NY - #11 Hunter College men's volleyball fell in a close five-set match to #4 ranked Stevens Institute of Technology on Wednesday night featuring scores of 29-27, 15-25, 26-28, 25-19 and 13-15.
The Purple and Gold are now 15-4 overall and continue to be 3-0 in CUNYAC play.
The match started with Stevens leading the first set 17-15 before the Hawks scored five-straight points off kills from
Brandon Kohler,
Ben Crusinberry and
Steven Tarquinio to take a 20-17 lead.
The set would include five more tied scores before the Hawks finally pulled away for a 29-27 victory.
The Ducks came back in the second set with revenge, getting a 25-15 win to tie the match, 1-1.
Hunter responded with a much closer third set, leading Stevens 25-24, but errors plagued the Hawks in the final points as the Ducks won, 28-26.
The beginning of the fourth featured kills from Tarquinio and Kohler to give the Hawks an early lead. The squad pulled ahead even more after a 7-1 run to make the score 16-9, eventually taking the fourth 25-19 to send it into a fifth set.
Tarquinio recorded two early kills to help Hunter to a 5-2 lead in the fifth but the Ducks came back, tying the score at nine. A 7-1 Stevens run gave the Ducks a three point lead as Hunter responded with two-straight points to get back into the match. Trailing by just one point, the Hawks allowed a Stevens kill, giving the Ducks the 15-13 victory and a 3-2 match win.Â
Tarquinio led the squad with 19 kills, while Cruisinberry and Kohler followed with 11 each and
Benjamin Cassidy and
Michael Jazgarski each added eight. Kohler recorded zero errors off 21 attacks for team-high .524 hitting percentage.Â
Nicolas Sanchez paced the Purple and Gold with 51 assists and Joe Muir finished with a match-high 19 digs.
The team returns to action when they face Brooklyn College and John Jay College in a CUNYAC Tri-Match on March 11.
