Alumni Spotlight with Bryan Suertegaray

NEW YORK, N.Y. - A four year starter for the Hunter College men's soccer team, Bryan Suertegaray was a mainstay for the Hawks. The Port Chester, N.Y. native appeared in 63 games for the Hawks with 57 starts. Over that time, the defender piled in 15 goals and five assists as well.Without the spring sports in session, we were able to catch up with the 2017 graduate and tap into how Hunter Athletics helped shape his postcollegiate career. Check out some of his answers here:

What have you been up to post Hunter?

I am currently a graduate student pursuing my Master's in School Counseling Education

You obviously were a stud on the soccer team. What was your favorite memory in a Hawks uniform?

Beating Baruch in the CUNYAC semi-finals my senior year. Scoring as a freshman during the playoffs was also memorable [vs Baruch as well].

Both great moments! Now, what was your favorite memory of your time at Hunter College?

Being able to wake up every morning during soccer season and go train with my brothers at Randall's Island.

Who was the staff member or coach who influenced you the most and how did they achieve that influence?

Stephanie Thorburn and Coach John Sanchez. They both were so caring and generous. Always willing to talk or lend a helping hand. They showed interest in us  more than just as soccer players.

Has participation in sports at Hunter prepared you for your current life/career?

"It helped me learn leadership and resilience. Being a Hawk taught me a lot about ways in which to lead and to communicate effectively with others while maintaining respect. Also showed me that no matter how many times you get knocked down, there's always more opportunities waiting for you. You got to get up and go after them relentlessly without the fear of failure.

What made you decide on Hunter College as your place of secondary learning?

"Proximity to home as well as the opportunity to go to school in Manhattan. Chance at a great affordable education."

Any advice to the Hawks that are on their way to graduation?

"Enjoy the ride. Cherish the small moments and celebrate all your victories - big and small. Don't be afraid to step out of your comfort zone, and continue to go after what you want unapologetically."
