Alumni Spotlight with Larry Joseph

NEW YORK, N.Y. - One of the cornerstones of the men's basketball program at Hunter College, Lawrence "Larry" Joseph exemplified what it meant to be a Hawk. The New York native was helped lead the squad to its first ever winning season and also topped the team in scoring. Joseph was described by his teammates as a leader both on and off the court, always holding himself to a high standard. We had time to catch up with the '55 graduate him HERE:

What have you been up to post Hunter?

"I got a job in Pharmaceutical sales for Sharpe and Dohme right after I graduated. I stayed with them for nine years before joining Allstate as a Company Agent, working with them until 2010."

Quite the longevity of work! What was your favorite memory in a Hawks uniform?

"As the new kids on the block, it took us a while to get uniforms and sneakers. [Once we got them], one of my favorite memories was beating Brooklyn, Queens and CCNY our freshmen year. A buzzer beater against Broome Tech also is up there."

Always great to beat our NYC rivals! Who was the staff member or coach who influenced you the most and how did they achieve that influence?

"Mike Fleisher. I still keep up with him as he lives in Hermosa, Calif. He left me in games which I really appreciated."

I think that goes for everyone when you say you want to soak up every last second on the court. What was your favorite memory at Hunter as a whole?

"Just the four years in a wonderful setting and the people I was able to meet along the way."

Has participation in sports at Hunter prepared you for your current life/career?

"It allowed me to hone the skills I was introduced to by my Uncle and father who coached excellent local teams. I knew my goals early on and was able to achieve them"

Any advice for the graduating Hawks?

"Try to determine what you wish for on the back end of your life and work towards it on the front end of your life as if you were blindfolded"
