New York, NY- In a first in over three years, the Hunter Wrestling team and administration hosted a Tri-match on Saturday January 7th. The tri-match featured hosts Hunter College, and visiting SUNY Brockport, along with New Jersey City University.
First on the mat was Hunter vs SUNY Brockport, Hunter did give up forfeits in three weight classes, putting them behind in the team score. However the Hawks were able to secure two victories by fall. In the 141 match
Deston McFarlane fell to Marquis Larmond in a 10-5 decision. Next up at 149
Jahongir Davronov won by fall at the 5:51 mark over Elijah Sims from Brockport. Sims was ranked #8 in the country by d3wrestle at the time, giving Davronov a top 10 victory for the first time this year. In the 184 match up Hunter's
Gevorg Arakelov secured a first period pin at the 2:00 minute mark, against Karam Ali, to grab Hunter's second win of the match. In the 285 Senior
Jacob Raboy lost a hard fought match 2-1 over nationally ranked Joe Yanis.
Next up for the Hawks was New Jersey City University, again Hunter had to forfeit 3 weight classes and started from behind, but they were able to pick up 3 wins. Deston mcFarlane came back from an earlier loss in the day and won the 141 match with a technical fall.
Gevorg Arakelov fought all the way back from a 6 point deficit and took home a victory in the 149 match in overtime, it was indeed the match of the day! In the 285 match
Jacob Raboy picked up a first period pin to close out the day!
Hunter returns to the mat this weekend January 14th with another home tri-match at the sportsplex. The action on the mat starts at 11am, Hunter will host Centenary and Rhode Island College!
