BOX SCORE Newark, N.J.- The Hunter College mens' volleyball team's win streak snapped on Saturday afternoon as the team fell on the road to Rutgers-Newark.
The 3-0 loss drops the Hawks to 7-7, while Rutgers-Newark moved to 10-8. Rugters-Newark hopped out to a seven point lead in the opening of the first set. Once the Hawks got on the board a point-for-point battled ensued but Hunter could not overcome the early deficit and fell 18-25 in the first set.
Hunter stayed close in the second set until an 8-1 run from the home squad distanced the two teams at 18-10. Despite the Hawks' best efforts they were unable to bounce back falling 17-25 to go down 0-2 for the match.
The Purple and Gold found themselves down nine early in the final set but a 9-2 run in which the Hawks capitalized on Rutgers-Newark's errors kept Hunter competitive as they closed to gap to 11-13. The two teams went back and forth, with Hunter coming within one at 19-20 after a kill from
Annes Deljanin followed by an error on the home team, but the Hawks were unable to close and fell in the third and final set of the match, 21- 25.
Muhammad Al-Amine Mbaye led the Hawks with nine kills, five digs, and a pair of aces.
Matisse Lee-Maarek and
Kyle Foley each tallied five kills of their own, with Foley also contribution a team-high four blocks.
Nick Yao and
Cooper Moran also had five digs as Moran paced the team with 22 assists.
The Hawks return to the court and resume conference play against cross-town rival, Baruch at home on March 12. First serve is slated for 6:00 p.m.
