NEW YORK — The Hunter College men's outdoor track and field team capped its 2025 season with a strong second-place finish at the CUNYAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships, held Saturday at Icahn Stadium. The Hawks totaled 166 points to finish behind Medgar Evers (273), while CCNY (76), Lehman (63), and York (26) rounded out the team standings.
Hunter earned multiple individual titles across distance, sprint, and field events.
Mateo Penafiel led the charge in the 1500m, taking gold in 4:20.06, followed by
Brian Guillermo in second (4:20.62) and
Melvil Badier in third (4:35.46) to complete a podium sweep. Penafiel also claimed silver in the 800m with a time of 2:10.34, while Badier secured third in the same event (2:13.25).
In the long-distance events, the Hawks picked up three more individual titles.
Leonardo Kaplan won the 3000m steeplechase in 11:15.61, while Guillermo took first in the 5000m with a time of 16:50.49, and
Hengzhi Zhu led the 10,000m field in 36:17.23.
Benjamin Landheim delivered in both hurdles and sprints, capturing gold in the 400H (1:01.00) and adding a third-place finish in the 400m dash (51.78).
The Hawks medaled in both relays. The 4x400m team of
Jocsan Crespo,
Hamza Elsherbiny, Landheim, and
Conor Sullivan placed second with a time of 3:42.54. The 4x100m squad of
Botensky Bauzile, Crespo, Elsherbiny, and Landheim took third in 45.16.
In field events,
Solomon Kumi earned silver in the high jump with a mark of 1.83m.
Jonathan Cauchi added a gold medal in the shot put with a throw of 11.44m and later placed fifth in the hammer throw (26.04m).
Fueled by individual victories and depth across disciplines, the Hawks closed out the meet with a 166-point total and a runner-up finish at the 2025 CUNYAC Championships.
