BOX SCORE JERSEY CITY, N.J. – The Hunter College men's volleyball team dropped a four-set match to New Jersey City University, 25-18, 24-26, 25-23, 25-23 on the roadThursday evening in a City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) matchup.
Hunter moves to 13-6 overall and 3-2 in conference play, while New Jersey City improves to 14-5 overall and remains unbeaten in CUNYAC action at 7-0.
The Hawks battled throughout the match and responded after dropping the opening set with a strong performance in the second. Hunter recorded 12 kills in the frame and held off a late push to earn a 26-24 victory, evening the match at one set apiece.
The third set was tightly contested, with Hunter recording 16 kills and hitting .250 offensively. Despite the strong attacking effort, NJCU narrowly claimed the set, 25-23.
Hunter again pushed the Gothic Knights in the fourth, trading points late before the hosts closed out the match with a 25-23 win.
Ahmed Mohamed led the Hawks offensively with 19 kills while adding 16 digs for a double-double. Demetri Gournelos contributed 10 kills, while Sebastian Gomez added nine kills and five blocks.
Emanuel Cochran delivered an efficient performance with eight kills on .462 hitting and added two service aces. K-Ci Akwandoh chipped in four kills on five swings for an .800 hitting percentage while contributing three blocks.
Wesley Stubbs guided the Hunter offense with 26 assists and four digs, while Lenny Arbitman added 16 assists and seven digs.
Hunter finished the match with 55 kills and a .246 hitting percentage while totaling 37 digs and eight blocks defensively.
The Hawks return to the court tomorrow for a nonconference match at Drew University at 3 p.m.
