Richard Wong (Bronx, NY/Lehman) and junior
Jerome Guce (New City, NY/Ramapo) earned picked up wins singles victories and also teamed up for a win at first doubles, but their efforts wouldn't be enough as the Maccabees of Yeshiva University squeak by with a 5-4 victory in both teams' men's tennis season opener on a cold Monday evening at the USTA Tennis Center in Flushing, NY.
Wong's 6-2, 6-2 win at first singles and
Guce's 6-2, 6-0 win at second singles put Hunter up 3-2 after the Macs came out of doubles play on top 2-1. Yeshiva would then pick up wins at third, fourth and fifth singles to wrap up the victory.
Freshman
Amel Bicic (Rego Park, NY/Forest Hills) won his debut match at sixth singles in three sets, 7-6, 4-6, 6-4 over senior
Eliezer Stavsky (Teaneck, NJ/TABC) to give the Hawks their fourth win of the day.
Hunter returns to action on Friday, when they host Polytechnic for a non-conference match at 3:30 p.m. at the USTA Tennis Center.
