Flushing, NY – On a day that had nothing but rain in the forecast, the Hawks took to the tennis courts to do battle with the Mariners of the Merchant Marine Academy and came out victorious, sweeping singles play and going 2-for-1 in doubles to earn an 8-1 non-conference victory Friday evening at the USTA Tennis Center in Flushing, NY.
The freshmen tandem of
Jayquan Gooding (Woodside, NY/Cardozo) and
Roy Forberg (Brooklyn, NY/AOSR) continue to excel, taking second and third singles 6-0, 6-1 and 6-0, 6-2 respectively. Senior
Richard Wong (Bronx, NY/Lehman) won his first singles match 6-2, 6-4 and then teamed with Gooding for an 8-4 first doubles victory.
Sophomore
Noel Marrero (Bronx, NY/Lehman) had a tough match stepping into the four spot tonight, after falling behind 3-6 in his first set, he was able to recover for a 6-3 win in the second and then took a 10-5 tiebreaker.
Junior
Kyle Manson (Brooklyn, NY/Midwood) won his fifth singles match 6-0, 6-3, while sophomore
Gian Arceo (Flushing, NY/Bayside) improved his season mark to 6-1 with a 6-4, 4-6, 10-6 win at sixith singles and then took third doubles 8-4 paired up with freshman
Amel Bicic (Rego Park, NY/Forest Hills).
The Hawks now improve to 6-3 on the year and will return to conference play on Saturday when they host the Dolphins of the College of Staten Island for a 5:00 p.m. match the USTA Center.
