Edgewater, NJ – The Hunter College men's tennis team made their 2009 debut on Thursday night, defeating Yeshiva University 9-0 as three Hawks earned their first collegiate victories in the non-conference match played at the Binghamton Racquet Club in Edgewater, NJ.
In his collegiate debut, freshman
Max Segan (New York, NY/Hunter) teamed up with sophomore
Roy Forberg (Brooklyn, NY/AOSR) for an 8-4 win at first doubles, while the second doubles tandem of sophomore
Jayquan Gooding (Woodside, NY/Cardozo) and freshman
Peter Stanciu (New York, NY/Locust Valley) picked up an 8-3 win. Third doubles was forfeited by the Maccabees.
The new look Hawks then clinched the match in singles play with
Segan earning a hard fought first singles match 6-7, 6-4, 10-4,
Gooding taking second singles 6-0, 6-4,
Forberg not giving up a game in a 6-0, 6-0 third singles match and
Stanciu won fourth 6-1, 6-0.
Junior
Noel Marrero (Bronx, NY/Lehman) was also impressive, winning his match 6-0, 6-0 and sophomore
Wendell Williams (Bronx, NY/Lehman) closed out the match with a 6-0, 6-1 win at sixth singles.
The Hawks are back in action on Friday, heading to the USTA Tennis Center in Flushing, NY for a non-conference road match against Polytechnic University at 3:30 p.m.
