Hawks Squeak Past Ramapo, 5-4

New York, NY – Competing in their final non-conference match of the regular season, the Hawks were able to squeak past Ramapo College 5-4, ending the Roadrunners four match win streak and giving the Hawks their tenth win of the season Friday night on Roosevelt Island in New York, NY.

Changing things up a bit, the match started with singles play and the Hawks with a shorthanded lineup found themselves knotted at three a piece with three first-year Hawks earning victories. First, freshman Max Segan (New York, NY/Hunter) took the first set 6-4, lost in the second 6-3, but then dominated in the third set to earn a 6-1 victory. Freshman Peter Stanciu (New York, NY/Locust Valley) also had a three set battle in his second singles match, dropping the first 7-6, but winning the next two 6-2 and 6-3. Then sophomore Ian Katz (Woodside, NY/American Studies) had a nice win at fifth singles 6-3, 6-3.

Hunter then secured the match in doubles with Segan and Stanciu winning first doubles 8-2 and the freshmen tandem of Andres Gonzalez (Hastings, NY/Hastings) and Wendell Williams won third doubles 8-3.

Hunter will be back in action Saturday when they are scheduled to finish up their big conference match with the College of Staten Island. Entering Saturday, the Hawks and Dolphins are tied at 3-3 with fourth, fifth and sixth singles yet to be played. That match will take place at the College of Staten Island at 2:00 p.m.
