Hawks Fall in Championship Match

Flushing, NY – Junior Noel Marrero (Bronx, NY/Lehman) earned his 11th win of the season, defeating senior Jonathan Choi 6-2, 6-3 at fifth singles, but his efforts wouldn't be enough as the Hawks come up short to the fourth-seeded Baruch College in the 2009 CUNY Athletic Conference Championship Match held at the USTA Tennis Center's indoor facility on Sunday evening.

In doubles play, the tandem of sophomore Roy Forberg and freshman Max Segan improved to 7-2 on the year with an 8-5 victory to tie the match at 1-1. In the third doubles match, the team of sophomore Ian Katz and Marrero went deep into the tiebreaker, but would end up falling 9-8 (12-10) to give the Bearcats a 2-1 lead heading into singles action.

Baruch then controlled the match with victories at first, second and third singles to win their sixth straight conference championship. The Hawks, who finished their 2009 campaign with a 12-4 record, are runners-up for the second consecutive season.
