New York, NY – The Hunter women's fencing sabre team finishing up their weekend going a perfect 5-0 with wins against Boston College, Tufts, Brown, MIT and Brandeis University while competing at the Eric Sollee Invitational held at Brandeis in Waltham, Massachusetts.
Brown 21 – Hunter 6
Four of the Hawks six points came in sabre with the tandem of senior
Nicole Schirmer and junior
Stella Shifrin going 2-1 to lead the sabre team to a 5-4 victory. The team's other two match points came from junior sabre Joanna Ong and sophomore epee
Nina Hsu who each finished 1-2 in their bouts.
Tufts 16 – Hunter 11
Shifrin won all three of her bouts against Tufts, while Schirmer finished 2-1 en route to a 6-3 sabre win. In foil, senior
Christina Lio went 2-1, while each member of the epee squad grabbed a win.
MIT 20 – Hunter 7
Shifrin and Schirmer once again led the Hawks with 2-1 records and Ong grabbed a victory for a 5-4 sabre win over MIT. In epee, Hsu and junior
Amanda Birro each finished 1-2 in a 7-2 loss.
Boston College 16 – Hunter 11
The Hawks earned an impressive 7-2 sabre win over Boston College, with Shifrin going 3-0, followed by Schirmer and Ong each finishing with 2-1 records. In foil, Lio finished 2-1 and Birro picked up two wins in epee.
Brandeis 18 – Hunter 9
Shifrin then won all three of her bouts against Brandeis to help the squad to a 5-4 sabre win. She finished the day with a 13-2 record, while Schirmer went 10-5. In foil, Lio won her fifth bout of the day, while Birro won her fifth and Hsu won her fourth in epee.
The team will now prepare for the EWFC Team Championship which will be held at the Hunter Sportsplex on Sunday, February 21.
