New York, NY – The Hunter men's tennis team opened up their 2010 campaign, defeating Yeshiva University 6-3 on an overcast Wednesday evening at the USTA Tennis Center in Flushing, NY.

The Hawks started the match off with the debut of new doubles teams as the tandem of freshman Yevgeny Perepelov (Brooklyn, NY/Keystone National) and sophomore Ian Katz (Woodside, NY/American Studies) downed Yeshiva's Joseph Itkis and Adam Weiss 8-3. Then, team veteran Noel Marrero (Bronx, NY/Lehman) teamed up with newcomer Louis Cruz (Bronx, NY/F.L.A.G.S.) for an 8-5 win at second doubles. At third doubles, Eddie Ashkenazie and Ephraim Liederman grabbed a win for the Macs over the young duo of sophomore Binh Luu (Bayside, NY/Cardozo) and freshman Irving Salazar (Corona, NY/John Bowne).

In singles play, freshman Arthur Kapetanakis (Staten Island, NY/Tottenville) gave the Hawks a 3-1 match lead with a quick 6-0, 6-0 win over Seth Nayowitz at third singles. Perepelov then put Hunter up 4-1 with a 6-2, 6-1 win at first singles. Competing at second singles for just the second-time in his four-year career, Marrero earned a 6-3, 6-2 over Sam Klein to give Hunter its fifth match point, thus clinching the victory.

The Hawks final team point came at sixth singles with sophomore Mark Goldfinger (New York, NY/School of the Future) taking a 6-2, 6-3 victory in his Hunter debut.

Hunter will now hit the road as they are scheduled to compete at Farmingdale on Sunday for a non-conference match with the Rams at 1:00 p.m.
